Eleven Things You Need To Remember About 9/11

It's sad but true: As the years go by, September 11 will recede from memory.
People who were alive on 9/11/01 will pass away. And those born years from now will have to rely on the stories and recollections of others or whatever winds up in the history books.
Given that secondary recollections are not always reliable and considering that history books have been sanitized by political correctness, we all need to begin to embrace a core set of 9/11 truths now -- things that we need to remember and pass on to future generations.
With that in mind, here (in no particular order) are 11 things you need to remember about September 11:
1) September 11 is better termed an atrocity than a tragedy. When you hear people refer to the events of that day as "tragic," correct them. Tell them what happened was atrocious, unconscionable and unforgivable.
2) The attack of September 11 was an affront to all human sensibility. The attack was an act of pure evil. And yes -- there is evil in the world.
3) Those who attacked our nation on September 11 want to annihilate all of us and destroy our very way of life. They are still active and their goals have not changed.
4) Thanks in large part to the policies put in place and the actions taken by President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, there has been no direct attack on our nation since 9/11/01.
5) Those who attacked America were and are cowards. They hide from others; they operate in darkness or under disguise; they run and they plan their dastardly acts in secret.
6) The victims of September 11 are not martyrs. Rather, they are heroes. They were innocent people living everyday lives and pursuing everyday dreams. To the extent they were able to, they struggled to survive and reached out to help others.
7) The heroic first responders who rushed in to help on that day and beyond exemplify the pinnacle of bravery, honor and self sacrifice. They are patriots.
8) In the words of President Bush: "Whether we bring our enemies to justice or justice to our enemies, justice will be done." This must remain our goal and our mission from September 11, onward.
9) September 11 constituted the worst attack ever ever perpetrated on American soil by a foreign enemy. It was unprecedented.
10) The loss, the anguish, the horror of September 11 lives on among the survivors and among the families and friends of the victims. Lives were forever changed that day.
11) Spirituality was, is and will always be a part of our response as Americans to that infamous day. Your steadfast commitment to honor the solemn memory of September 11, to seek justice and to comfort those who still suffer must be accompanied by prayer and reflection. Remember. Reaffirm. Renew.

Romney: Strength Is Our Only Sure Defense!

I start with the fundamental conviction that America is the greatest nation in the history of the world and a force for good.  And while we are not perfect, I will not apologize for America!
Our president has taken a different approach.  Have we ever had a president who was so eager to address the world with an apology on his lips and doubt in his heart? He seems truly confused not only about America’s past but our future.
So critical was President Obama of America before the United Nations that Fidel Castro complimented him for his “courage” and “brave gesture.”  And Venezuelan dictator and thug Hugo Chavez joined in on the praise.
We can’t lead the world by hoping our enemies will hate us less. Ronald Reagan rallied America with “Peace Through Strength.”
American strength is the only guarantee of liberty.  American strength turned the Cuban missiles around.
American strength caused the collapse of the Soviet Union.  American strength yanked Saddam Hussein out of his spider hole.  With freedom as our cause, strength is our only sure defense!

This Picture Truly Is Worth A Thousand Words

This picture - and the heartwarming story that goes with it - may have popped up on a friend's Facebook wall, or you may have received it via "chain" e-mail.

It's certainly made the rounds - it's been going since 2006 - and it's 100% true.

Here's the story:

He is a Chief Master Sergeant in the USAF serving in Afghanistan, as high as you can go in enlisted ranks (E-9). Wouldn't it be fitting if this went completely around the world!

John Gebhardt's wife, Mindy, said that this little girl's entire family was executed. The insurgents intended to execute the little girl also, and shot her in the head...but they failed to kill her. She was cared for in John 's hospital and is healing up, but continues to cry and moan.
The nurses said John is the only one who seems to calm her down, so John has spent the last four nights holding her while they both slept in that chair. The girl is coming along with her healing.

He is a real Star of the war, and represents what the combined service is trying to do.
This, my friends, is worth sharing. Go for it!! You'll never see things like this in the news.

Please keep this going. Nothing will happen if you don't, but the world needs to see pictures like this and needs to realised that what we're doing over there is making a difference.

Even if it is just one little girl at a time.

If there was any explanation needed for why the men and women of our Armed Forces put their lives on the line across the globe, you've go it right here. This is the true spirit of the American soldier. May God keep them safe and bring them back unharmed to their loved ones.

Memorial Day Lives In Small Town America

Maybe it's the timeless nature of the scenes.
Maybe it's the sense of community in a small town.
It could be a community pickup band playing under a big tree. Or it could be Old Glory held high, passing under the Town Clock on Main Street. Or it could simply be an old soldier with his hand over his heart or a young child proudly waving the flag or a mother looking on with a special awareness.
Whatever it is, we know that Memorial Day -- and the spirit of America itself -- lives on in its small towns and cities; in these places where neighbors pitch in to help one another and where cherished values endure.
This is where those who gave their all are remembered and cherished -- here and, one would hope, throughout our land.
The scenes above are from historic Haddonfield NJ, the picture-postcard town that seems made for such occasions.
But in fact, these scenes can found anywhere in America this weekend -- and even abroad where cemeteries have been set aside as resting places for Americans who died defending freedom around the world.
Wherever you are: honor, remember, reaffirm!

Memorial Day: Keep Faith, Take Up Their Torch!

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields. He was a medical officer in both the Boer War and World War I. A year into the latter war he published in Punch magazine, on December 8, 1915, the sole work by which he would be remembered. This poem commemorates the deaths of thousands of young men who died in Flanders during the grueling battles there.

Christie: Honor Those Who Made 'Ultimate Sacrifice'

IIn honor of Memorial Day, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie yesterday joined Major General Glenn K. Rieth, The Adjutant General, and a number of our State's veterans at the State's Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown. The Doyle Cemetery, with approximately 15 burials each business day, covers 225 acres and was designed to accommodate 154,000 men and women who have served in the Armed Forces as well as their families.

“Memorial Day is a time to honor the men and women who wore this nation’s uniform and made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of liberty, democracy and freedom,” said Governor Christie. “I am pleased to join veterans and their families to honor the selfless service and sacrifices made by the veterans who are laid to rest at Doyle Cemetery.”

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMAVA), led by Major General Rieth, provides services to New Jersey’s more than 460,000 veterans from the time they leave military service until they are laid to rest. In addition to supporting all of the vital programs provided by DMAVA, including a toll-free mental health hotline for veterans, Governor Christie has signed legislation that strengthens the support network for military families after the death of a service member, as well as a program that awards high school diplomas to veterans who dropped out to serve in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

In addition to the cemetery, DMAVA operates three Veterans Memorial Homes - Paramus, Menlo Park and Vineland - as well as a transitional housing program for homeless veterans in Winslow Township. DMAVA also maintains a statewide network of Veterans Service Offices who work to ensure all of the state’s veterans receive the federal and state entitlements earned through their service. The DMAVA team of 18 Veterans Service Officers accounted for the awarding of nearly $72 million in federal benefits to New Jersey veterans last year.

A Remarakable Tribute To Our Heroes

Between the fields where this flag is planted, there are 9+ miles of flower fields that go all the way to the ocean. The flowers are grown by seed companies.
It's a beautiful place, close to Vandenberg AFB.
Check out the dimensions of the flag. The Floral Flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide and maintains the proper flag dimensions, as described in Executive Order #10834.

Runyan: Restore Trust In Arlington Gravesite Quest

The Veterans’ Affairs Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee has passed HR 1627, legislation which advances key language sponsored by Subcommittee Chairman Jon Runyan (R-NJ) and Congressman David Loebsack (D-IA) that would end an unofficial system of “reserved” gravesites for VIPs at Arlington National Cemetery. “I thank the Committee for their support.  Today, we begin the process of rebuilding trust with how this treasured national shrine manages burial reservations,” said Congressman Runyan.  “Veterans’ families throughout the country can begin to believe in the process once again.  Passing this legislation will ensure that all eligible veterans have an equal chance and opportunity to be laid to rest and it ensures that no veteran is given preferential treatment.   It confirms a commitment we all share that we honor our nation’s veterans and their families both in life and death.”
“Arlington National Cemetery is our nation’s most hallowed ground and the mismanagement that has been uncovered at the cemetery is disgraceful,” said Loebsack. “Backroom deals and off the book reservations in violation of Army policy are counter to everything Arlington stands for. This legislation will put an end to this shameful practice and will ensure that any person who has fought for our nation will be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, without regard for rank or status.”
Until 1962, gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery were allowed to be reserved. However, the Army reversed the policy after 1962 and determined that gravesites should be provided to any qualified military veteran regardless of rank or status.
Despite this change in policy, it became apparent that past superintendents of Arlington National Cemetery allowed this unofficial reservation process to continue. The new Executive Director of the Army National Cemeteries Program, Kathryn Condon, last year announced that the Army will continue to honor reservations made properly before 1962 as long as the deceased meet current eligibility requirements.
Congressman Runyan and Congressman Loebsack’s legislative language, which was included with other bills in a package, would end the unofficial reservation system at Arlington National Cemetery and require the Army to investigate the number of plots that may have been set aside in defiance of the 1962 policy.

America In The Age Of The 'First Person Presidency'

At National Review, Victor Davis Hanson has done a marvelous job of analyzing President Obama's Sunday night speech on the capture of Osama Bin Laden and look at how he's highlighted various parts and phrases in this excerpt:
“Tonight, I can report . . . And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta . . . I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden . . . I met repeatedly with my national security team . . . I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action. . . . Today, at my direction . . . I’ve made clear . . . Over the years, I’ve repeatedly made clear . . . Tonight, I called President Zardari . . . and my team has also spoken. . .These efforts weigh on me every time I, as Commander-in-Chief . . . Finally, let me say to the families . . . I know that it has, at times, frayed. . . .”
Hanson calls this the FIRST PERSON PRESIDENCY. And indeed, it is perhaps the most egotistical presidency in American history.
As one moves along in life (and one encounters more than one's share of overblown egos) this much becomes clear: A Big Ego often masks deep-seated insecurity or maybe even more serious problems.

Anyway, you owe it to your self to read what Victor Davis Hanson has written. Click here for the full column.

Has Obama 'Screwed Up' OBL Death Aftermath?

Is President Obama in the process of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?
Well, no one can deny that the killing of Osma Bin Laden was a high point for the Administration -- a dramatic international coupe and huge rally-round-the-flag moment with Obama at the center of the spotlight.
But Jim Treacher, writing in The Daily Caller, seems to think that Obama & Co. bungled the triumph even before all the hoopla began.
Here's tiny part of what he says:
It’s been less than 72 hours since President Barack Obama announced that U.S. Special Forces “a small team of Americans” had killed Osama Bin Laden. Since then, his administration has been hard at work screwing the whole thing up.

Dershowitz: How We Mishandled Osama's Body

In The Wall Street Journal, Harvard's Alan Dershowitz writes that there is no real risk that the photographs will inflame Muslim or Arab sensibilities any more than the photographs of Saddam Hussein did.
Here's an excerpt from this "must read" piece:

The president's decision to withhold photographs of the dead Osama bin Laden is only the last in a series of terrible mistakes in the handling of his body. Although there should be no doubt that bin Laden is actually dead, there are grave doubts as to the circumstances surrounding his death. Was he shot in cold blood? Was he shot in the back or in the front? Were his hands raised in surrender? Was he actively resisting?
Many of these doubts could have been resolved if bin Laden's body had been subjected to the usual investigatory techniques routinely employed in homicide cases. His body should have been subjected to an autopsy, to forensic testing by an experienced medical examiner, to extensive photographing of entrance and exit wounds, to paraffin testing for gun-powder residue, and to other such forensic examination.
Burying his body at sea constituted the willful destruction of relevant evidence, which naturally gives rise to suspicions that there was something to hide.

Runyan Returns From Afghanistan Trip

Congressman Jon Runyan has just returned from a congressional delegation visit to Afghanistan.
Here's an excerpt from a Burlington County Times story:
Congressman Jon Runyan was in Afghanistan with a congressional delegation just days before U.S. commandos killed Osama bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan, but the freshman lawmaker did not learn about the clandestine raid until President Barack Obama announced the terrorist leader’s death to the world.
“He was never briefed on the attack,” Runyan press secretary Chris Terrell said Tuesday, adding that the 3rd District representative did meet with top military and civilian commanders to discuss security and strategy in the ongoing military conflict against the Taliban and al-Qaida.
During his two days in Afghanistan, Runyan, R-3rd of Mount Laurel, also met with American service members and attended a memorial for fallen troops as well as a “ramp service,” in which the remains of troops are given a respectful ceremony as they are loaded onto an aircraft to return to the United States for burial.
“It was an honor to meet with our troops in the field. They and their families suspend their lives to answer the call of our nation. There aren’t enough words of appreciation for what they do,” Runyan said Tuesday in a statement.

Bush Declines Obama's 'Victory Lap' Invite

President George W. Bush will mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in September but he will not be going to the World Trade Center site in Manhattan with President Obama tomorrow.
Here's an excerpt from the story as reported by The Daily Beast and MSNBC:
Former President George W. Bush has declined President Obama’s invitation to jointly visit Ground Zero on Thursday. “President Bush will not be in attendance on Thursday,” his spokesman told The New York Times. “He appreciated the invite, but has chosen in his post-presidency to remain largely out of the spotlight. He continues to celebrate with Americans this important victory in the war on terror.”

Raid: Obama Kept Military Waiting For 16 Hours

In customary fashion, President Obama kept top commanders waiting -- even after they were ready to go -- until he gave the command to launch the raid on Bin Laden's headquarters.
Here's an excerpt from London's Daily Mail:
Barack Obama kept military commanders hanging by declaring he would 'sleep on it' before taking 16 hours to give the go-ahead to raid Bin Laden's compound.
Hit squads of specialist Navy Seals - who were not even told who they were preparing to capture - had practised the mission at two reconstructions of the terror chiefs sprawling compound.
The mission looked set to be given the all clear last Thursday when analysts confirmed beyond doubt that Bin Laden was in busy town of Abbottabad in northern Pakistan.
But the president stunned officials when he told a national security meeting that he wanted to more time to think - and disappeared out of the room. I'm not going to tell you what my decision is now - I'm going to go back and think about it some more,' said Obama, according to the New York Times. He then added 'I'm going to make a decision soon.'
