'Think You Can Dance' Finalists In Philly

Finalists from hit television show “So You Think You Can Dance,” will perform some of their hottest routines live on stage at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday, September 25, as part of their So You Think You Can Dance Tour 2011. Tickets will go on sale exclusively through ComcastTIX on Friday, July 29 at 10 a.m. on line at ComcastTIX.com, by phone at 1-800-298-4200, or in person at the Wells Fargo Center Box Office.
The live on stage dancing include routines in hip-hop, contemporary, ballroom, tango, broadway, salsa and more. The finalists performing in the 2011 tour are Caitlynn, Clarice, Jess, Jordan, Marko, Melanie, Mitchell, Ricky, Sasha and Tadd. These ten finalists in the eighth season of So You Think You Can Dance range in age from 18 to 25 with expertise in hip-hop to jazz to contemporary and come from all over the United States. Due to the physical nature of the performances, not all dancers may perform and dancers are subject to change.

Flyers, Sixers Gear On 'Blow-Out' Sale Sunday

Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers sports fans can take advantage of big savings on T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, jerseys and apparel as Comcast-Spectacor and Aramark host a “blow-out” sale on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In Philly: Agassi, Sampras, Connors, Courier

InsideOut Sports + Entertainment announces that eight-time Grand Slam Singles Champion Jimmy Connors has been added to the 2011 Champions Series lineup to compete against Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Jim Courier in Philadelphia in the Champions Shootout at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, September 24.

Connors will be replacing John McEnroe for Philadelphia’s tournament of the Champions Series.

Connors will be added to a star-studded cast of players that already includes the likes of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Jim Courier, Michael Chang, Bjorn Borg and Matts Wilander. The athletes will compete for a prize pool totaling $1 million to be shared by the top three finishers at the conclusion of the season. Each of the 12, one-night tournaments will feature four champions paired off in one-set semi-finals competing for ranking points, culminating with the winners contending for the title in an eight-game pro-set championship match.
The newly expanded and reformatted Champions Series will kick off in Fort Lauderdale and continue the highly competitive tennis circuit to a total of 12 U.S. cities over a five week season through October 22.
The Champions Series is a tennis circuit for champion tennis players over the age of 30, created in 2005 by InsideOut Sports + Entertainment, the New York based firm which is co-owned and operated by former SFX executive Jon Venison and former world No. 1 Jim Courier.

Collegiate Rugby Event: Back To Philly In 2012!

USA Sevens, NBC and Global Spectrum, operators of PPL Park, announced this afternoon that the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) will return to PPL Park in Chester in 2012, based on the success of the 2011 event, which concluded on Sunday, June 5. The announcement was made during NBC’s live broadcast of the CRC. The dates and participating teams of the 2012 CRC have not yet been decided.

"We are building a truly national event in the Collegiate Rugby Championship and can’t imagine better hosts than the Philadelphia region and PPL Park," said Jonathan First, president of USA Sevens. "We’ll see you in Chester, PA in 2012."

“Based on the overwhelming support of sports fans throughout the greater Philadelphia region, we are excited to bring the Collegiate Rugby Championship back to PPL Park again next spring,” said Jon Miller, President of Programming for NBC Sports and VERSUS. “PPL Park is a spectacular facility. Global Spectrum, who manages PPL Park, has been incredibly supportive in the production, execution and marketing of this highly successful tournament. The Philadelphia region and rugby are the perfect combination, as this weekend we have clearly laid the foundation for future successes of this event right here at PPL Park.”

The 2011 CRC featured 16 of the top collegiate men’s rugby clubs and eight of the top collegiate women’s rugby clubs in a two-day tournament with 38 matches. The weekend-long rugby festival also included live entertainment from rock band Dropkick Murphys, gourmet food carts, rugby youth interactive area, high school combine, international beer garden and rugby legends.

N'tl. Rugby Tournamet Sat./Sun. In Philly

Sixteen of the nation’s best collegiate rugby teams compete for the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) title beginning tomorrow (Saturday, June 4) starting at 9:58 am at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., just off I-95. Round One of the tournament features 24 round-robin matches. The first match of the tournament begins at 9:58 a.m. with the Louisiana State-Penn State match-up.
Other notable matches include Boston College-Notre Dame at 10:42 a.m., Arizona-Temple at 12:10 p.m., Ohio State-Penn State at 12:54 p.m., California-Penn State at 4:06 p.m. and Army-Navy at 5:02 p.m. The last match of the opening round begins at 7:30 p.m. with Oklahoma-Temple. Each match consists of two seven-minute halves.
The CRC tournament also features a massive Rugby Festival and Block Party. Highlights of the CRC Block Party include local entertainment, free concert by Dropkick Murphys on Saturday evening, six of the East Coast’s best food trucks, international beer garden, a high school recruiting program and rugby interactive area and rugby legends.
The tournament and block continue on Sunday, June 5 where the Men’s and Women’s Collegiate Rugby Champion will be crowned.

Army VS Navy In Philadelphia, Sat., June 4

It is one of the oldest rivalries in all of sports, one rich in tradition, and linked to the City of Philadelphia for over 100 years: Army vs. Navy. A new chapter will be created for this legendary match-up when the two teams meet face-to-face at PPL Park in Chester, PA at 5:02 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 in the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC). The competition, which features 16 of the nation’s top collegiate rugby teams, concludes on Sunday, June 5 also at PPL Park.

Rugby is the most winning team at West Point and has been a leader in USA college rugby since its founding in 1961, competing in the Collegiate Rugby Sweet 16 Tournament every year since its inception.

“Like most athletes at West Point, our team enjoys the challenges of being leaders and athletes,” Army Head Coach Rich Pohlidal states. Working through those challenges at West Point gives his players the military and leadership requirements they need. “Being on the athletic field is very much the same as being in the Army,” Pohlidal continues. “Certain programs, rugby being one of them, know this and try to structure their programs that way.” Pohlidal also observes that his ruggers “get into more elite units and high companies.”

It is also true that Navy SEALs have a connection to Rugby. “This year we had two SEAL selectees, neither are on the squad due to training commitments,” comments Navy Head Coach Mike Flanagan. “I think the SpecWar [Naval Special Warfare Command] community likes the fact these guys can think, react and respond to an ever-changing situation with poise and confidence. The job is like rugby: fluid, dynamic and physical.”

The Cadets and Midshipmen have profound requirements and obligations that extend into the summer beyond their academics.

“For us,” begins Pohlidal, “it is great to have the West Point leadership [Superintendent General Huntoon, Commandant General Rapp, Director of Cadet Activities, Colonel Flowers, and Dean General Trainor] as a supporter of Rugby, especially with the structure of the Military Academy. Our cadets, and the Midshipmen, have summer training duties and other obligations. To have both Cadets and Midshipmen involved in the CRC is a great opportunity for our academies.”

Army and Navy, assigned to Pool C of the tournament, will also face the ruggers from Central Washington and North Carolina in the first day of the round-robin schedule.

Justin Hundley, Army’s Assistant Coach and 7’s Specialist, says Army always looks forward to competition with good athletes and that Central Washington will play a very good brand of 7’s. “Against UNC, the Cadets will need to play an aggressive defense, which Hundley says “suits Army well.”

“The CRC caps off our year,” Navy’s Flanagan notes. “We get to play great teams in a terrific venue. Certainly we have a tough road with UNC and Central Washington, neither of which are pushovers. The fact that Army is in our pool just makes it better.”

Army and Navy rugby played each other earlier this season at West Point in what Flanagan calls a “terrific game of rugby,” despite Navy’s 34-27 loss. Both teams were undefeated at the start of the match.

Both coaching staffs are aware that “Philly loves Army-Navy” and agree that “the world wants Army-Navy.”

“With Army-Navy, it’s always a big deal,” Hundley admits. “Winning Army-Navy is comparable to winning a championship game.”

“Shoot, people would show and take sides if we had an impromptu game of tiddly-winks,” confirms Flanagan.

Philly Launches Major Rugby Initiative

The School District of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation are offering the newest Olympic Sport, Rugby, to eight selected middle schools and recreation departments. In partnership with four Promise Academies, Play Rugby USA, USA 7’s and the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Football Union, over 150 local Philadelphia students will participate in the inaugural season. This program is in association with the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) coming to PPL Park on Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5.

The eight selected Philadelphia facilities are: Dr. Ethel D. Allen Promise Academy, Potter-Thomas School, Paul Lawrence Dunbar Promise Academy, Roberto Clemente Middle School, James Finnegan Playground, Palmer Playground, Simons Youth Access Center, and Murphy Recreation Center

The program is being managed by Play Rugby USA, a national non-profit organization devoted to its mission of “developing youth through rugby.” Play Rugby USA President, Mark Griffin, explains that the “rugby-themed youth development program combines the coaching of life skills through structured games after school with regular team-based competitions. This gives students a new opportunity to be physically active and belong to a team and a broader rugby community that will give them the skills and support network they need to stay in school, off the streets and be healthy for life.”

The School District of Philadelphia looks forward to working with Play Rugby USA on this new project. The Executive Director of Athletics for the Philadelphia School District, Robert Coleman, affirms that “it’s always an exiting time when we are introducing our students to new activities and new avenues to explore those interested in sports.” He continues that “rugby will also offer our youth an alternative to the negative pressures and influence that they face every day when they are away from school.”

In addition to the middle school rugby program, high school students and their parents will have the opportunity to meet college rugby coaches from across the nation at the Collegiate Coaches Recruitment Program during the CRC at PPL Park. In the greater-Philadelphia area, 50 high schools currently have a rugby program. Over 30 college programs will promote their university and rugby program to interested students and the coaches will discuss admissions support, scholarships, grants and participation and support networks on their campus. Both men’s and women’s programs will be represented and colleges include Boston College, Notre Dame, Penn State, Temple, West Virginia, Delaware and Connecticut.

Also at the CRC, current high school rugby players will be invited to test their skills, speed and agility in various events at the first-ever rugby combine. All scores will be recorded by USA Rugby High Performance staff and distributed to the rugby coaches of the universities participating in the Collegiate Coaches Recruitment Program. Drills include passing/accuracy, 10 meter sprint with rugby ball in both hands, 40 meter sprint and three cone agility drill. Students interested in participating in the Rugby Combine should register at www.USASevesCRC.com. The program is open to any high school male or female high school student.

Sesame Street Live Helps Schools Go Green

Sesame Street Live’s Elmo and friends announced that they will help Philadelphia area schools go green by collecting flower and plant seeds before each performance of Sesame Street Live “Elmo’s Green Thumb” at the Liacouras Center, from Saturday, March 12 through Monday, March 14.

Each patron who brings a packet of flower or plant seeds to the Liacouras Center box office will receive a $3 discount per ticket for each packet of seeds donated. At the conclusion of the show’s run, Sesame Street Live will send the donated seeds to Philadelphia area elementary schools for students to plant on school grounds this spring.

Temple Undergrad Brings Sesame Street To Life

This spring, while many Temple University undergrads are fleeing Philadelphia for warmer weather and a welcome relief from work and school, sophomore anthropology and strategic communications major Laura Gillespie will be doing just the opposite. She will bring one of the most famous residents of 123 Sesame Street to life, portraying the role of Abby Cadabby at the Liacouras Center from Saturday, March 12 through Monday, March 14.

Gillespie, originally from Levittown, PA., has taken her talents from Broad Street to Sesame Street, touring around the country with the show since August 2009, and is especially excited to return to the Philadelphia area to perform in front of her family and friends at her university’s arena.

“Knowing that I am in an arena not only close to home, but one that is a part of my university is very exciting. I know I will be full of adrenaline knowing that my family and friends are in the audience. The applause and cheers from the crowd always give me energy and create excitement in me as a performer. Knowing that my mom, dad, aunt’s uncles, and grandparents are a part of the crowd will be even more exhilarating.”

Toy Story 3 On Ice In Philly: Wonderful!

Last night we had a chance to enjoy Disney's phenomenal Toy Story 3 On Ice at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The show runs through January 2 and we urge you not to miss it.
It's a great show for kids of all ages and fortunately we attended with two of the nicest kids we know.
But here's the truth: While it was heartening to see so many kids (and families) having a fun time, this is a show that you can enjoy with or without the kids.
The characters are wonderful. The themes are universal. The lighting, costumes are staging are impressive. And here's one of the best parts: The ice skating is marvelous.
Thanks to Disney, ice shows have moved well beyond the days of mere pageantry. Now, the show encompasses a story. And since it involves the classic toys from the Disney feature films, even the tiniest tots can relate to the characters and the story.
On top of all that, the folks at Philly's Wells Fargo Center (formerly the Wachovia) are so courteous, professional and helpful that it's a joy to visit this world class sports and entertainment facility. Bravo to Comcast Spectacor!
