Romney To Unveil Major Economic Plan

Mitte Romney will unveil a major plan for jobs and the economy tomorrow.
But You can find a preview of it in a fine column that Romney has written for USA Today that also appears on Mitt's website.
Here are some brief excerpts from the column:

Tomorrow, I will introduce a plan consisting of 59 specific proposals — including 10 concrete actions I will take on my first day in office — to turn around America's economy. Each proposal is rooted in the conservative premise that government itself cannot create jobs. At best, government can provide a framework in which economic growth can occur. All too often, however, government gets in the way. The past three years of unparalleled government expansion have retaught that lesson all too well.
Only the individual initiative of entrepreneurs, workers, investors and inventors enables companies, and our economy as a whole, to flourish. We must once again unleash the tremendous economic potential of the American people. The contrast between what the Obama administration has done and what I would do as president could not be starker. . . .
Seeking to pay back political favors, President Obama has catered to the institutional interests of union bosses at the expense of both workers and businesses. I will fight against measures that deprive workers of basic rights, such as the secret ballot. . . .
I will also press for a Constitutional amendment to balance the budget. Tellingly, while the private sector shed 1.8 million jobs since Barack Obama took office, the federal workforce grew by 142,500, or almost 7%. A rollback is urgently required.

Romney: Help Jobless, Those Facing Hardship

romney-2012-blog-photo-ohio-more-jobs.jpg

A special message from Mitt Romney:
As we celebrate this Labor Day, we should not forget the great many families facing economic hardship. Over 25 million Americans are unemployed, underemployed, or so discouraged that they have stopped even looking for a job.
This week I will outline a comprehensive plan to put America back on the road to economic growth and job creation. We cannot continue on a course that has kept unemployment above 8 percent for the longest stretch since records have been kept. The potential of the American people has been demonstrated time and again. With leadership that understands how jobs are created, that potential can be unlocked – that is why I am running for President of the United States.

Romney: Strength Is Our Only Sure Defense!

I start with the fundamental conviction that America is the greatest nation in the history of the world and a force for good.  And while we are not perfect, I will not apologize for America!
Our president has taken a different approach.  Have we ever had a president who was so eager to address the world with an apology on his lips and doubt in his heart? He seems truly confused not only about America’s past but our future.
So critical was President Obama of America before the United Nations that Fidel Castro complimented him for his “courage” and “brave gesture.”  And Venezuelan dictator and thug Hugo Chavez joined in on the praise.
We can’t lead the world by hoping our enemies will hate us less. Ronald Reagan rallied America with “Peace Through Strength.”
American strength is the only guarantee of liberty.  American strength turned the Cuban missiles around.
American strength caused the collapse of the Soviet Union.  American strength yanked Saddam Hussein out of his spider hole.  With freedom as our cause, strength is our only sure defense!

“I want to make America the strongest economy on earth.”  . . . .“What I’ve seen from this president is not a AAA presidency but I’ll call it a DDD presidency. It’s been a presidency which has been associated with debt and with downgrade and with delay.” --Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney On The Campaign Trail

“We would not have seen the president on a bus tour had his first 940 days in office been successful. President Obama has not gotten the job done and his policies have failed. He’s hoping that by going on a three day bus tour he can make up for hundreds of days of failure.” –Mitt Romney

Here We Go Again: Is Christie Running?

And so people keep asking me: Is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie running for President?
Why is this happening -- again?
Well, just within the past 48 hours Karl Rove has been suggesting that Christie may be leaving his options open; that he may indeed jump into the fray. Rove says that Sarah Palin, Paul Ryan and Chris Christie could all be late entries into the GOP field.
Look, Chris Christie's not dumb. He's a damned good politician. He knows that none of the current GOP candidates have really seemed to catch on so far. None have really lit a bonfire. He pays attention. And he can read the poll numbers just like anyone else.
A good politician keeps his options open.
But, you respond:  "Christie has said he's not running and there's nothing that could get him to run. Hasn't he closed the door to a presidential run?"
Verbally, he has. And I do believe that in his own mind he's 90% sure he's not running -- maybe even 95%. That's quite certain. And I don't expect Chris Christie to be a candidate this year.
Plus, I believe Christie when he says he's still looking for a candidate to back for the GOP nomination. I take him at his word. I can understand that none of the candidates may have really captivated him so far.
Considering that, it makes sense that Christie must sometimes look at the field and think to himself: "Damn, I can be a better candidate than any of 'em."
So, there's a teeny, tiny, really narrow crack left open in the window (and I stress, just a narrow crack) when it comes to Christie and the presidential race this year.
But there are other factors. And what's more likely is that Christie will hitch his wagon to a GOP star. He'll endorse someone for president.
The Governor believes the next president should have executive experience. And, he's partial to governors.
I don't think Christie would tend to favor Palin. Just not the right chemistry there.
Which means we're looking at either Perry or Romney. Remember this: Christie rose to prominence in politics as a Bush bundler. He raised a ton of money for George W. Bush. And Christie's pal, Bill Palatucci has close ties to the Bushes. Factor in that there is no love lost between the Bushes and Rick Perry. Recall that in 1988 when George H. W. Bush was seeking the GOP nomination for president, Rick Perry was a Democrat and chaired the presidential effort of Al Gore in Texas.
Word is that there's bad blood between the Bush family and Perry.
Which brings us to Romney. Mitt Romney was an early supporter of Chris Christie here in New Jersey. He championed Christie's cause, even before Christie snagged the Republican nomination.
I was there in Haddonfield on a bright sunny day in May, 2009 when Romney endorsed Christie on the steps of the Haddonfield borough hall on Kings Highway. I reported it right here.

“I’m convinced the challenges facing New Jersey and the rest of the country can be overcome with courageous leadership. Chris Christie is a strong conservative voice for balanced budgets, low taxes and more jobs. He will bring badly-needed change to state government,” Romney said at that time.
“By electing Chris Christie, the people of New Jersey will be taking a giant step toward a brighter and more prosperous future,” Romney added.
Romney was right. He bet on a winner.
Now, I've got to believe that Romney & Co. are seeking to collect on that bet.
At a critical place and time -- at just the right place and just the right moment -- Mitt Romney hopes to stand next to Christie (just as Christie once stood next to Romney) and receive Christie's endorsement for president.
And assuming things fall into place (always a big assumption in politics) that may yet happen.
Stay tuned . . . .

Obama Spells Civility: 'Kill Romney'

"It is disgraceful that President Obama's campaign has launched his re-election with the stated goal to 'kill' his opponent with an onslaught of negative and personal attacks. President Obama will say and do desperate things to hold onto power because he knows he has failed. Neither despicable threats, nor President Obama's billion dollar negative campaign, will put Americans back to work, save their homes, or restore their hopes. On November 6, 2012, this will change." - Romney Campaign Manager Matt Rhoades

Romney: From Carter Malaise To Obama Meltdown

"When I was governor, S&P rewarded Massachusetts with a credit rating upgrade for our sound fiscal management and the underlying strength of our economy. That didn’t happen by accident. The president’s failure to put the nation’s fiscal and economic house in order has caused a massive loss of confidence that resulted in an embarrassing downgrade. In the Carter era, it was called ‘malaise.’ Under President Obama, it’s called meltdown.” --Mitt Romney

Romney: Downgrade Part Of 'Failed Leadership'

Mitt Romney has released the following statement of the historic downgrade of America's credit rating:

“America’s creditworthiness just became the latest casualty in President Obama’s failed record of leadership on the economy. Standard & Poor’s rating downgrade is a deeply troubling indicator of our country’s decline under President Obama. His failed policies have led to high unemployment, skyrocketing deficits, and now, the unprecedented loss of our nation’s prized AAA credit rating. Today, President Obama promised that ‘things will get better.’ But it has become increasingly clear that the only way things will get better is with new leadership in the White House.”

Romney: Obama's Jobs Talk Is All Talk

Following is a special message from Mitt Romney:

The latest monthly unemployment numbers are out this morning. The Obama administration has broken yet another record. We have now gone 30 months with the unemployment rate over 8 percent, the longest such interval since the Great Depression came to an end.

Jobs are "my administration's overriding focus," said Barack Obama back in November 2009 just as he was putting the finishing touches on his job-killing health-care legislation.

Jobs are "priority number one" is what he said in January 2010.

And today he is talking about jobs again and again.

But talk seems to come easy to the President. What exactly is he doing, and where are the jobs? A lot of unemployed Americans want to know.

We need to move in a different direction. We need to get government out of the way and get the economy back on course. We've done it in the past. With the right leadership we can do it again. We're paying a high price for the hesitations and mistakes of a President who has been learning on the job.

America can do better, much better. That's why I am running for President. I hope you'll join my effort to turn things around.

Obama Support Erodes In Florida, Romney Up

President Obama's polling numbers are down all over the country.
The President has lost (and continues to lose) significant support.
For example, a new poll shows his numbers down a full seven points just since May in the pivotal state of Florida.
Now only 44% of voters in Floroida approve of the job Obama is doing more than half (51%) dsiapprove,
And there's more bad news for the President: GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney has pulled even with Obama in Florida.
You may have noticed that Romney is focusing more and more on Obama and less and less on his Republican primary opponents. Romney's in serious prep for the general election campaign. For Obama, the shoe's on the other foot this time around. Now he's the President and he has to grapple with the nation's problems and fend his own record.
Meanwhile, Romney can fire away -- trying out new arguments and meeting strategies and attempting to further weaken Obama's eroding support.
Romney's two tag lines (Believe In America and Obama's Not Working) play on both positive and negative angles. He aims to hit Obama head-on while extolling the virtues ordinary Americans and America itself Romney's current campaign is a laboratory for what's to come.
Stay tuned.

Romney: 'Cannot Support' Debt Deal

Mitt Romney has issued the following statement:

"As president, my plan would have produced a budget that was cut, capped and balanced – not one that opens the door to higher taxes and puts defense cuts on the table. President Obama’s leadership failure has pushed the economy to the brink at the eleventh hour and 59th minute. While I appreciate the extraordinarily difficult situation President Obama’s lack of leadership has placed Republican Members of Congress in, I personally cannot support this deal.”

Major GOP Role For Rubio in 2012?

Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus said today that Florida Senator Marco Rubio will play a major role in the 2012 Republican presidential campaign.
Priebus spoke on a conference call with reporters. He is not the first Republican to suggest that Rubio will be playing an increasingly influential role in the 2012 Republican effort.
Republican nomination contender Mitt Romney has been hinting that Sen. Rubio could be a potential running mate.
Reportedly, one Romney insider said: “We think that [Romney/Rubio] could be a dream ticket.”It does have a nice alliterative ring to it.
The RNC chair said Rubio could assist Republicans in building support among the Hispanic community. And let's not forget the delegate-rich, pivotal state of Florida.
Lots of people are high on Rubio. He certainly seems to be a vital part of the future of a growing and increasingly diversified Republican Party.
Viva, GOP!
