Man's Best Friend Mourns At Casket of Fallen Navy SEAL

Another touching story of how "furry family" pay tribute to their owners.

From Today:

Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson lay in a coffin, draped in an American flag, in front of a tearful audience mourning his death in Afghanistan. Soon an old friend appeared, and like a fellow soldier on a battlefield, his loyal dog refused to leave him behind.

Tumilson’s Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, was photographed lying by Tumilson’s casket in a heart-wrenching image taken at the funeral service in Tumilson’s hometown of Rockford, Iowa, earlier this week. Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end, reported CBS.

The photo was snapped by Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton, and posted on her Facebook page in memory of the San Diego resident. Tumilson, 35, was one of 30 American troops, including 22 Navy SEALs, who were killed when a Taliban insurgent shot down a Chinook helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade on Aug. 6.

“I felt compelled to take one photo to share with family members that couldn't make it or couldn't see what I could from the aisle,” Pembleton wrote on her Facebook page. “To say that he was an amazing man doesn't do him justice. The loss of Jon to his family, military family and friends is immeasurable.’’

World's Cutest Dog, In Profile

So many of you keep asking us about the World's Cutest Dog.
And you always seem to enjoy seeing new photos of him.
Well, here he is in profile. As you can see, he's a healthy and happy fella.
And here's the thing: He's as charming as he is good-looking. He has a wonderful temperament. He's friendly, gentle and playful but also strong and determined.
He is a Lancashire Heeler, a relatively rare breed of dog that falls under the pastoral group with hearding and terrier instincts. They are the smallest of the herding breed.
The name "heeler" comes from this dog's herding instinct. These heelers have worked on farms, herding cattle and sheep. In England, they were used in the past to drive cattle to slaughter houses. They can also use their their hunting instincts to catch mice, rats and rabbits.
They have become increasingly common as pet dogs and some have even become successful show dog.
But there aren't many Lancashire Heelers and they are still considered a vulnerable breed.

Video: Japanese Dog Won't Leave Injured Friend

Translation of conversation in video:
We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty.

He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.

Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead.

Where?

Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright.

The dog is protecting him.

Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

I can't watch this. This is a very difficult to watch.

Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive.

Yes! Yes! He is alive.

He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon.

Oh good. He's getting up.

It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all.

The dogs were picked up after the video was filmed, and are in the care of a local shelter. Updates and pics will be here in the coming days: http://www.facebook.com/lifewithdogs

Caring For Your Pet: Cold Weather Tips

The American Humane Association believes that pet owners should take special care with pet animals (particularly dogs) during the cold weather months. The AHA says: if you must leave an animal outdoors in cold weather, follow these tips:
  • Snow is not an adequate source of water and water left in regular bowls will freeze — heated water dishes are essential.
  • Provide your pet more, high-quality food — animals will burn more calories when left outside.
  • Take extra care of elderly and very young pets — they are most susceptible to suffering in cold weather.
  • Elevate doghouses off the ground so cold and moisture don’t rise through the floor. Face the doghouse away from the wind and provide a door flap to keep wind and snow out. Pile up straw around the outside of the house to insulate it.
  • Your indoor dog will appreciate the extra warmth of a doggie coat, but if your dog stays outside, don’t use a coat — the fabric will freeze when wet.
  • When walking your dog, consider dog booties to protect foot pads from chemicals, salt and sand. Also, wear gloves that will not impede your ability to properly hold the leash and clear the leash clasp of ice build-up.
  • Antifreeze is highly toxic to pets, but its sweet flavor is enticing. Keep containers sealed and out of reach and check for puddles. If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze, seek immediate emergency veterinary treatment.
  • Don’t leave your pet in a parked car — the car will act as a refrigerator and could result in death.
  • Cats and other animals are often lured to warm parked-car engines. Bang on your hood before starting up the engine.
  • Don’t let your dog chew on firewood and keep him away from indoor or outdoor fires, matches and accelerants.
  • After being outside, check your pet for signs of hypothermia: shivering, muscle stiffness, low body movement, a weak pulse rate, lethargy, shallow breathing and disorientation. If you suspect your pet has hypothermia, seek immediate veterinary treatment. Don’t submerge your pet in warm water or place anything hot on his skin. Warm water bottles wrapped in towels, as well as blankets and towels fresh from the dryer, are best.
  • In addition to protecting your own pets, keep an eye out for other animals exposed to the weather and contact your local animal control or humane society to report concerns.
  • See more winter care tips on the AHA website.

Why Dogs Are Smarter Than Cats

Dogs are smarter than cats for a reason.
Dogs are more sociable animals and sociability requires more brain power.
So, over millions of years, dogs have had to develop bigger brains than cats. Dogs need more brain capacity because they are not solitary.
That's the result of an exhaustive study by researchers at Oxford University. The researchers attempted to study the development of different groups of mammals over millions of years.
The more sociable the mammal group is, the smarter it tends to be.
Click here for more on this fascinating story from Science Daily.
BTW: Elephants (also mammals) are incredibly smart. Elephant brains — weighing more than 10 pounds — are so advanced that zoologists have measured behavior that reflects compassion, sympathy, and grief. And of course elephants are remarkably social.

Do you feel like we do?

Peter Frampton's 1976 classic, "Do you feel like we do" hit song comes to my mind every time I see dog with it's head out the car window. What is it about this? Is it that they get an adrenaline rush, a free feeling? Is it the same things that drives us to ride? Anyway, I was going down the road the other day, and spotted this dog loving the open road, wind in his face. He had the right idea. I happened to be in my car, wishing I was on my bike. I was jealous of the dog.

This one was classic Kodak moment. I had to have the photo, so I took it. The guy driving the car looked a little disturbed that I was taking a picture of him going down the road, as if I was taking a picture for evidence of something he may have done wrong or something. I blurred him out for integrity sake. Dude driving the red S.U.V., If you see this, you now know why I took your picture.

Hey, do You feel like "He" do? The dog that is.
